Stern, blonde-eyed, handsome, Phil Burbank is brutally seductive. The whole romance, strength and weakness of the novel is captured in the past and on earth: he can castrate a calf with two quick cuts from the knife; he swims naked in the river, staining his body with mud. She is a cowboy as raw as her skin. It’s 1925. The Burbank brothers are wealthy Montana cattle ranchers. At the Red Mill restaurant, on the way to the market, the brothers meet the widow owner Rose and her impressive son Peter. Phil behaves so cruelly that it makes them cry, enjoy their pain and make other cowboys laugh, besides his brother George, who comforts Rose and then remarries him. When Phil balances between rage and cunning, his mockery of Rose takes on a spooky form: it floats on the edge of his sight and whistles a melody he can no longer play. His mockery of his son is clearer and reinforced by the cheers of Phil’s military disciples. So Phil seems to take the boy under his wings.
