According to the book, Cry Macho plays with Clint Eastwood as a former rodeo star and a tired horse rider who took a job from a former boss in 1978 to bring a baby boy home and away from his drunken mother. On the way back to Texas, the mysterious couple travel through rural Mexico and embark on an unexpectedly challenging journey in which a tired world rider can find his liberating feelings by teaching a young man what it means to be a good man.
